Transformation: From normal to fangirl

I always found the manga art style very appealing. I always thought that gay couples were kinda cute. But how did I become such an obsessed manga, anime, yaoi and especially FAKE fangirl?

This is how my transformation took place!

The first time that I've heard (better: read) of the word "yaoi" was in the comments below a video on youtube. It was a fanvideo about some german youtube stars (my greatest obsession back in those days!) and the fan who had created the video had only used ambiguous scenes so that it looked as if the two boys in the video were a gay couple. All the comments below said something like: "Oh my God! So hawt!!" and "Yaoi *_*" and "YAOI ! <3" and "OHMYGAWD YAOI !! <333 *drool*" so naturally, I wondered:

What the hell is yaoi?

I did some research and found out that the term stands for manga and anime which focusses on homosexual relationships. This got me even more interested, because, as I mentioned above, I always felt a certain attraction to anime as well as to gay couples.

For whatever reason though, I wasn't interested enough to do some more research. I kinda forgot about yaoi.

Then, in summer 2011, I visited some friends who showed me the first episodes of Elfenlied. Back at home, I watched the last episodes online at an anime website. I got interested in anime and searched for other good animes and other websites.

This was when I came across the website Yaoi Kiss (http://yaoi-kiss.wetpaint.com/(EDIT: The site got taken down recently and doesn't exist anymore :( Date: 2013/06/02) where you could download and watch many yaoi animes. (Many of the links are broken by now, but the crew is still working on fixing them). I remembered the definition of yaoi and decided to watch some yaoi OVAs there, just to find out if I liked that stuff or not. Christmas holidays had just started, so I had much free time to spend on downloading and watching one OVA after the other.

And this was how my obsession began.

BeBoy Kidnappin Idol was the first yaoi anime I've ever watched on Yaoi Kiss. It was a few days before christmas 2011. And there was probably no better way to keep me interested in yaoi: The OVA is funny, cute, and there is no hardcore sex scene at all. So nothing disturbing for my innocent inexperienced eyes. ;D

FAKE was also one of the first yaoi OVAs I watched via Yaoi Kiss. I loved it from the start. The characters, the story, the humor - I was truly thrilled. I watched the OVA more often than I can recall, sometimes even three times a day. I think my record was five times, but I'm not quite sure anymore. ;D

When I looked it up the OVA on youtube, I noticed that many viewers criticized that there was no sex and not many kisses and that the OVA was focused too much on the story and too little on the romance. I didn't understand these people. I thought, the OVA was perfect.

Today, I still think that the OVA is perfect, but I can understand the critic by now.

I've learned that most yaoi mangas / animes don't have a strong plot and focus mainly on romance and sex.

Of course, when people are used to this and expect the same of FAKE, they could get disappointed. But I still didn't know many yaoi animes back then and didn't know either how x-rated many of them are. Soon, I found out though...

When I watched other OVAs that had the same rating as FAKE and Kidnappin Idol, for example Hey Class President, I was a little bit shocked. Let me just show you my comment on this OVA because it expresses pretty well my reaction:

Well... now what shall I say about such a softporno? o.O It's not bad, but I was, let's say, not prepared for it. It really has to have three hearts instead of two! After seeing BeBoy kidnappin idol, which has also two hearts,

I really didn't expect something like that... However, the characters are still kinda cute with their thoughts and problems, and they make a nice couple, too. But unfortunately, a real plot does not exist.
So I give it 2 points out of 5.

I think it's hilarious to see how taken aback and mildly shocked I was, not only concerning the sexiness, but also concerning the "not existing plot"! xD By the way, meanwhile, I really really like this OVA and don't find it disturbing anymore ;)

As time went by, I got to know many yaoi stories. But there was only one that fascinated me much more than the others.

I couldn't get FAKE out of my mind.

I watched the OVA  again and again, even made my first fan videos, and I was so sad that there was no second OVA. I really wanted to know how the story continued. Luckily, I found out that there was also a manga and allegedly, it was even better than the OVA. I couldn't believe that. How could anything be better than this anime? And then even a manga, where the pictures are black white and don't move!

Still, I went to check it out - and spent the rest of my christmas holidays behind my laptop.

I was officially addicted.

Even my little sister got interested in FAKE, although she didn't even like yaoi back then! Well, she didn't really hate it either, she was just a bit annoyed because everyone on youtube talked constantly about it. But she read FAKE because she found it funny and now, she is a little yaoi fan as well! (I still think though that a serious lemon scene would scarce her for life, but at least she understands my yaoi obsession a bit :D). (EDIT: Recently, I made her watch Sensitive Pornograph because she wanted me to shock her, and what can I say... she IS now scarced for life ;D Date: 2013/06/02)

But back to me. I was a yaoi fan, or rather a FAKE fan now, but still, I needed some time to get used to lemon scenes - in mangas, animes as well as in text form. Luckily, the two sex scenes in FAKE were no extreme explicit smut, so I really liked them from the start, although the idea of gay sex was still very new for me.

After finishing the manga, I visited fanfiction.net because I still wanted more. And there, I found Brit_Columbia. And her Life Journal with all of her wonderful FAKE fanfiction. Reading her stories is nearly like reading the manga: there's humor, there's a great plot, there's action, there's romance, and she always stays true to the characters. And last but not least, her stories made me love lemons - not only the fluffy ones anymore, but also the explicit stuff.

Brit_Columbia and all other fanfiction authors are the ones who keep FAKE alive for me nowadays.

Besides FAKE, I'm also a fan of some other animes. For example, I'm a huge Death Note fangirl. I also adore Ouran Highschool Host Club (it's so funny! xD). I've watched Elfenlied and many, many yaoi OVAs. But FAKE is and remains my all-time favorite! :)

So, this is my story. What's yours? ;)

(P.S.: I once made a picture to illustrate what I consider "No-go's" in Yaoi. Originally, I wanted it to have to sides: "What I love about Yaoi" and "What I hate about Yaoi", but I didn't come up with enough ideas for the positive side because every good yaoi manga / anime is amazing in its own way, therefore I didn't manage to generalize what I like about them, whereas the stories that I don't like are mainly the stereotypical ones, so it was quite easy to sum up what about them annoys me again and again.)

**NEW**

Several short stories / side stories featuring FAKE in Guri + Gura are now in the new section "FAKE feat. Guri + Gura".
