FAKE in a nutshell

FAKE is a Boys' Love manga by Sanami Matoh. The main characters are Randy Ryo Maclean and Dee Laytner, two New York cops who fall in love with each other. But life and love are seldom easy for them...

Besides the first season (the seven-volume-manga which is finished), there is also an unfinished second season. Rumor has it that Sanami Matoh was forced to change her style into something more modern and she did not like it herself so she did not finish the second season. But remember that this is only a rumor, as far as I know! Also drawn in the new style is Volume ES (some extra chapters set after the first season).

Furthermore, there is a very sexy sidestory doujinshi called "Backstage Pass", drawn by Sanami Matoh in the new style.

Like, Like, Love is another sidestory. Though drawn in the old style, it is set after season 1, season 2 and Backstage Pass.

FAKE was also made into an OVA (Original Video Animation = Anime) which shows what happens in chapter 5 of volume 2 of the first season manga.

Additionally, you could purchase the OST (Official Sound Track) of the OVA and the FAKE CD collection (japanese). Unfortunately, both were only available in Japan.

And last but not least, Sanami Matoh has also drawn a short, but sexy scene featuring Ryo and Dee in a book called "Frontier". Here, she used the old style.

Plot: Unlike many other Boys' Love mangas, FAKE contains an interesting, exciting storyline. Dee and Ryo not only have to solve difficult crimes in which they often get personally involved, but there is also this big problem called LOVE. If you're further interested in the plot, just check out "The Story".

Drama: Yes, FAKE is dramatic. Although it is Boys' Love, it is not all fluffy pink glitter hearts. And I am really glad about that.

There are explosions, shoot-outs, drug-dealing, murder, prostitution and crazy psychopaths. Death, loss and injury are always lurking just around the corner. Both Dee and Ryo do not have any parents (anymore), as well as their little friends Bikky and Carol, who had a dark past too.

If you fear now that romance will miss out, I can give you the all-clear. Yes, there is violence, and yes, there is drama. But nevertheless, there are still many romantic and sexy moments.

Just check out "The Story" and you will understand what I mean. ;)

Unresolved Sexual Tension: Another thing that I miss in many Shonen-ai- and Yaoi-mangas. Most of those stories are full of sex scenes, and although that may be hot, it is quite boring overall. In FAKE, Dee tries to seduce Ryo again and again, but he scarcely ever succeeds. Scarcely ever! And when it eventually comes to the sex scenes, there is this "Yay, they finally do it! It was about time!!"-feeling and you are grinning like a happy idiot. I have never experienced this feeling with any other story.

Hot cops: Well, this does not need much explanation, does it? ;) Let me just say that Dee and Ryo are not the only pretty cops at the 27th precinct: There is also cute little JJ (who is madly in love with Dee) and the very cool, very mean Commissioner Berkley Rose who does everything to conquer Ryo.

Slapstick: Besides romance and tension, HUMOR is probably one of the most important things in a manga! At least, this is my opinion. And I just love the humor in FAKE. Both the manga and the OVA are hilarious. There are many scenes which I can read / watch again and again and I am still rolling on the floor laughing my ass off. So if Plot, Drama, Unresolved Sexual Tension and Hot Cops did not really convince you yet to read FAKE, you should at least not miss out on the fun! Just give it a try and I bet you will be ROFLMAOing all over your room soon enough.
